It's a Mystery!

How do you find a chirping smoke detector? Should be an easy task, right? Not at our house! And why do they always start chirping for a new battery in the middle of the night? What's wrong with good old 11:00 in the morning? Many a night over the years we have spent the wee hours of the morning standing very still in the hallway trying to place that chirp.

Tyler woke me up early this morning all scared because "something loud woke me up...it was an alarm!" I hadn't heard anything and said "Yeah, yeah, yadda, yadda, let's get you back in bed." Later, when I was finally downstairs making a sack lunch for Justin I heard the "alarm" chirp. Oh, Ty was right. Sorry, bud.

So, today my mission that I have no choice but to accept is to find that mystery smoke detector. It is randomly chirping and so hard to find. No "I need a new battery" light flashing or continuous beeping. (Once and hour, every couple of minutes, five hours later, every 30 seconds for 2 minutes.) I have to stand in the hallway upstairs where four smoke detectors are nearby and try to decipher the culprit.

Please tell me I'm not the only one! And let me know if you know a trick to help! I am crossing my fingers I can find it before nap time. Otherwise, I'll be kissing that one goodbye for sure!

You know, I have to laugh. That exact same thing happened to us. Jer would replace the batteries (of course, in the middle of the night), and, of course, it was the wrong one. We couldn't figure it out until the next day, and it drove us CRAZY!!! So good luck! Sadly, I have no tips for you, but I hope it makes you feel better that you're not the only one.

OH no. you are so not the only one, and the best thing about the mystery alarm, is it always starts in the middle of the night! Hooray!

Pull the battery out of each one you check so you don't get tricked. (Remembering to put them all back after finding the offending one of course;) ) depending on how many you have it could take a while as you already know. Kari's dad donated a pile of them to us last year and when one went bad I think it took me 2 or 3 days to find the right one, just to have another go bad the next day. Good Luck!

So funny! I can picture you walking around waiting for it.

My mother in law had TWO chirping smoke detectors over the holiday! TWO! I finally got used it them, like the planes in Hillsboro if you know what I mean! ( up on very high ceilings, no ladder)

just the other week we had this problem and we kept second guessing our choice of the culprit . . . eventually we realized we had the right culprit but that that alarm was malfunctioning . . . we tried two different new batteries and both still lead to chirping . . . so now there isn't a battery at all in it . . . i guess we'll have to get a new one!

Happened to me twice last year, both in the wee hours of the morning like at 2am. Come to think of it, I don't think I have ever heard about one going off during the day hours...why is that! And, sad to say I can be of no help either. Doesn't even work to take the batteries out of ours, they are all hard wired together. So if one goes off they all go off (all EIGHT of them). Talk about a heart attack at 2 in the morning.

That is so true, it is always in the middle of the night. We had the same problem a couple weeks ago. We also had the alarm go off several times during the middle of the night and ended up spending the night in our van waiting for the gas guy because we were worried that it might be the one that was also a carbon monoxide detector. It turned out to be nothing... except for an adventure.
