Have you tried this?

Speed Cleaning

"Clean your entire house in 42 minutes with the Clean Team's unbeatable system that makes every move count."

Tonight at Enrichment, we learned about this speedy-delivery cleaning method. I'm curious, have any of you tried this before? I'm thinking I'll have to check it out from the library and take it for a spin....

It's all about using my time wisely. I am already converted to the speed cooking way of life. It's called "Slow Cooker"! Throw everything in first thing in the morning and life is wonderful by the time dinner rolls around! We have the 1:00-4:00 church block this new year. By the time we get home at 4:30 or 4:45, we're all starving. My new plan of attack is to make a crock pot meal every Sunday morning. So far, so good. For the last two Sundays I made Italian Chicken and Chicken Cacciatore. Next I want to try a roast. If you have any favorite slow cooker recipes. Please send them my way. Our tummies will thank you!

Tawnya Lasagna

We had a fun, fun weekend with my sister, Tawnya, this past weekend! We weren't ready to say goodbye when Monday morning rolled around. Where did the time go?

Well, since you asked: :)

Thursday night we went roller skating! Yes, roller skating! Tawnya and I took Justin to his school's skate night party. We took Tawnya's black Mustang rental car.

Justin saw the horse on the front grill and said, "Why do we want to take a country car? Wacka ding?" (Where does he get this?) I told him that it was a cool race car and he would have fun riding in the back. He didn't believe me. So, he ho-hummed until Tawnya revved the engine to race down the street. It scared him and he begged her to slow down and be quiet. We laughed and she did it again off and on until we got to the skating rink. We arrived with him begging her to never do a "power boost" ever again. She said "O.K."

We had a whole lotta crazy fun roller skating! Justin was determined not to get his picture taken, so we had to be tricky. I'm amazed that we ended up with some good pictures of the night.

It was cute to see all these little girls coming up to say "Hi Justin!" In a few years I'm sure I'll be fired because I kept answering back ("Hi!") with a big smile to those little friends when they'd say something to Justin and he'd look away mumble something in return. Tawnya and I each held one of Justin's hands and pulled him around the rink. After a while we realized we were gripping his hands so hard that they were bright red. Poor kid! By the time we were about ready to leave, he was making it around without falling or tripping one of us.

The second we got back into the Mustang, Justin asked, "What about those, you know, power boosts?" He wanted more of them. We were so surprised! After "boosting" all the way home, he yelled out as Tawnya and I were giggling as the engine revved, "This is what's cool about a Mustang!" Tawnya and I busted out laughing!

Later, when we were getting out of the car to go into the house, our next door neighbor said, "Those were some fancy moves around the rink there!" That made me laugh! Yep, we were going for "fancy" and we managed to have some fun, too!

On Friday Tawnya worked in the morning and then just played and played with the boys for the rest of the day until our movie/popcorn night. I can't even think of the movie we watched. But, oh that popcorn was tasty!

Tyler was so cute with Tawnya! He was her little shadow all weekend. He kept asking her if she wanted to cozy with him on the couch. They read lots of stories and played with lots of Mommy and baby animals. Thanks for being such a fun Aunt, Tawnya!

On Saturday morning, Travis played in a basketball game. Then he was so wonderful to have a "Boys' Day" with Justin and Tyler while Tawnya and I shopped ALL DAY! He even took them on a bike ride to the school playground. Then we came home to an amazing grilled salmon dinner. It was fabulous! Travis earned many, many brownie points this weekend!

Sunday was glorious, of course, and it was fun to sit by my sister in Relief Society. Then, one of her missionary companions came by to play games. Lots O' laughs with the Cranium game "Zigity"! Travis even came up with a new nickname for Tawnya. Tawnya Lasagna! You have to know the background, though. Tawnya is famous for making silly nicknames for her brother-in-laws. Jeff is "Jeff-a-tree", Travis is "Travel-iss" and Joe is "Josephina". Well, Travis finally came up with a fitting name for her. I can't believe we didn't ever figure out that Tawnya rhymes with Lasagna. Good one, Trav. Even Tawnya agreed!

Before I knew it, it was Monday morning and I was driving home with Tyler from dropping Tawnya off at the airport. Thanks for coming, Tawnya Lasagna! We love you and can't wait to see you again!

It had to be RED!

In honor of the new President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, I have to share something Justin said today:

I went shopping this morning and bought Justin a couple of new ties and clothes. When he got home from school, I showed him what I had bought. He hates those clip on ties that come with all the little boy suit sets. So, I have been on a quest to find him a "real tie". One of the ties I bought is red with a black and white design. I knew he would love it because red is his favorite color of all time. This is a kid who wants a red bedroom, red truck, red juice...you get the picture. But his response caught me off guard. It made me giggle.

Justin: Cool Mom, you got me a president's tie! Thanks, I like it a lot!

Me: What is a "president's tie"?

Justin: You know, whenever any president gets up to speak they wear a red tie like this with a cool design on it.

The funny thing was when I looked up pictures of the inauguration. Yep, it's practically the same tie! You know, honestly, if I had thought of it being a "president's tie" I would have never bought it for my 6-year-old. But now, it is already cemented into his wardrobe. I'm sure I'll learn to like it. But every time I see it I'm going to think of my little president-to-be...and laugh.

I have noticed how Justin has been so excited to learn about our new president. His class watched part of the inauguration on Tuesday. It's big news for all of us, but it has surprised me how monumental this occasion has been in Justin's eyes. My little guy is growing up...fast!

But I like 2009!

You Belong in 1986

Wild, over the top, and just a little bit cheesy. You're colorful at night - and successful during the day.

I was 10 years old in 1986. I have to admit I did try that tank top peeking out with a shirt down over my shoulder. (My Mom and Dad didn't approve...and to think I wondered why?) Alright, as long as I get to wear jelly bracelets and double-layered colored socks, count me in! Oh yeah, and I'd have to listen to lots of Bon Jovi! All that and a bag of chips...maybe some Pop Tarts and NERDS thrown in for good measure! So how about you?

We Love Visitors!

Today, my cousin, Brooke, and her husband, Mac, and baby, Foster, came to visit us. They live in Cedar City, UT, and came up to Washington and Oregon this week for business. We were so excited to see them after Brooke called to tell me they'd have time to hang out today!

They ate a quick lunch with us and then went to church with us. I loved holding their 2-month-old cutie and got my newborn fix for the day! :) Brooke was so nice to read to Tyler all through sacrament meeting. Then after we got home, Mac was an amazingly good sport who went above and beyond the call of duty when he sang along to any book as Tyler strummed his ukulele! We like you lots! They stayed for dinner afterwards and we had our designated "easiest" crock pot chicken dinner. Here's the recipe if anyone would like to try it:

Italian Chicken

2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1/2 cup Italian salad dressing (we love Newman's Own Italian Dressing)
1 tsp. Italian seasoning (or mix basil, oregano, crushed red pepper and garlic powder)
1/2 cup grated Parmesan or Romano cheese (I leave this out but it is yummy)
4 potatoes, peeled and cut in wedges
baby carrots (as many as you like)
1 onion, cut in chunks

Place chicken in bottom of crock pot. Sprinkle with half of the Italian dressing, spices, and the grated cheese. Put the potatoes, onions and baby carrots on top and around the chicken. Sprinkle with the rest of the dressing, spices and cheese. Cook on Low for about 6-8 hours, or until the chicken and potatoes are tender. We love the dressing so much that sometimes we pour extra on as we eat.

It was a fun day for us and we are looking forward to seeing them again. Next time we'll have to get their 5-year-old son together with our boys to play. (He was at home with Brooke's parents) Thanks for coming you guys! You are welcome anytime!

Now for our next visitor...see you next Thursday, George! (We are excited to see you, Tawnya!)

And after that? First come, first served! Hint, hint!

It's a Mystery!

How do you find a chirping smoke detector? Should be an easy task, right? Not at our house! And why do they always start chirping for a new battery in the middle of the night? What's wrong with good old 11:00 in the morning? Many a night over the years we have spent the wee hours of the morning standing very still in the hallway trying to place that chirp.

Tyler woke me up early this morning all scared because "something loud woke me up...it was an alarm!" I hadn't heard anything and said "Yeah, yeah, yadda, yadda, let's get you back in bed." Later, when I was finally downstairs making a sack lunch for Justin I heard the "alarm" chirp. Oh, Ty was right. Sorry, bud.

So, today my mission that I have no choice but to accept is to find that mystery smoke detector. It is randomly chirping and so hard to find. No "I need a new battery" light flashing or continuous beeping. (Once and hour, every couple of minutes, five hours later, every 30 seconds for 2 minutes.) I have to stand in the hallway upstairs where four smoke detectors are nearby and try to decipher the culprit.

Please tell me I'm not the only one! And let me know if you know a trick to help! I am crossing my fingers I can find it before nap time. Otherwise, I'll be kissing that one goodbye for sure!

Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

I love Christmas music! I could listen to it all year, although I don't. I usually have a little Christmas music craving in the middle of July and then I put the Cd's away again until the day after Halloween. We put the Christmas tree and most of the decorations away over the weekend, but out Christmas Cd's are still front and center. We listen to them every day.

Today Tyler was cozying in our bed listening to Christmas movie music. You know that song from "Santa Claus is coming to town" that goes "...just put one foot in front of the other..."? Ty loves this song and so I put it on repeat. He has been singing it around the house as he plays with his toys. I love the message it is teaching him. What a great attitude for a new year!

I'm so giddy for Tyler right now! This is going to be his favorite blog post to go back to for forever! I'll include the lyrics also so we can have all the words somewhere I'll be able to find next year. :)

Put One Foot In Front Of The Other
Lyrics by Bass, Jules

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking out the door

You never will get where you’re going
If you never get up on your feet
Come on, there’s a good tail wind blowing
A fast walking man is hard to beat

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking out the door

If you want to change your direction
If your time of life is at hand
Well don’t be the rule be the exception
A good way to start is to stand

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking out the door

If I want to change the reflection
I see in the mirror each morn
You mean that it's just my election
To vote for a chance to be reborn

(repeat chorus twice)

Travis took Justin out to lunch one day last week to celebrate his Jackson Jaguar with his free meal coupon at a pizza place. Then he got to help Dad take the van to the car wash. Big fun for Justin and Tyler is glad he didn't get roped into going because he's terrified of it. While they were gone, Ty and I got out our guitars and played Christmas songs. We sang at the top of our lungs for about an hour. I love that he is my little musical guy. He was strumming away on his ukulele and singing every single song with me. So cute. I really need to get that on video. We stopped for lunch and he wanted to do it again as soon as we were done eating. It's so much fun to have a little guitar buddy.

Here's a picture from summer 2007 of me and my ukulele boys:
