I'll always remember...

To my sweet baby girl, Allie Mai. This is the story of the beautiful day you were born.

It was Sunday, August 22nd, 2010, five days before your due date. I had been having contractions off and on all weekend keeping me up late Saturday night. I felt too tired to get up early for church so I slept in until 10:45 a.m.

By the time I woke up, my contractions had stopped completely. I remember I looked out the window to see a perfect, sunny day. I was full of energy. I took my time getting ready for the day and had a relaxing morning. I would pat my belly and say "Hi Baby!" whenever you would give me a big kick.

Daddy made us a big, yummy lunch with fresh pineapple. His friend at work said he had heard fresh pineapple might put me into labor. We thought we'd give it a try.

It worked.

I called Doctor Ed to let him know I had been having contractions off and on all weekend and they felt different, like they were accomplishing something. At 12:30 when I called, my contractions were about 20 minutes apart.

By 2:00, big brother, Justin, was timing them at about 5 minutes apart. But they still seemed pretty light to me.

The doctor called at 3:00 to check up on me and told me to come on over to the clinic to get checked. I thought he'd just check me and send me back home. But then I knew that if this really was it, I'd need my things. So, I quickly finished packing our bag and gathered some snacks. By 3:45 we were ready. We hadn't told the boys yet.

Justin and Tyler had been playing Legos in their room. When we told them to get ready to go over to Aunt Nicki and Uncle Lance's house, they hooted and hollered with excitement and immediately hopped up and cruised downstairs pulling their overnight suitcases. They were so excited to finally see you.

Justin said "Mom, now I know what you mean about being ready to go at ANY time!" They had had their bags packed and ready to go for weeks.

In the car, I asked the boys what they thought you would look like. Tyler said, "I think she will have pink hair." Justin said, "I think it will be blonde. All girls have blonde hair, Mom." Little did we know you would have auburn hair.

A while later, Justin said, "I can't stop smiling! It's just like Christmas!" He was right. Except this was even better than Christmas. We were nearly bursting with excitement. I remember feeling so happy right at that moment as we were driving down the freeway. I said a prayer in my heart that I wouldn't be sent back home. I really, REALLY wanted to hold you in my arms today.

We arrived at the Natural Family and Childbirth Clinic in Portland at about 4:30 in the afternoon. Travis drove the boys over to his sister's house in Vancouver (15 minutes away) as I checked in at the clinic. When the doctor checked me I was already at a 3 1/2. Yay! He said "Don't you think things will just keep moving along now?" I said, "I sure hope so!" He told me to plan on staying.

Travis got back at about 5:30 and joined me in bed timing contractions with his iPhone. He played games on his phone until I took it away from him and told him we needed to "focus". When the boys were born, they took their own sweet time. I was determined this time that we were "off to the races" and there would be no "dilly dallying" for me. I remember feeling so giddy and excited that you were going to be born soon.

The doctor assistant was observing me from across the room and trying to time my contractions. At one point she said she couldn't even tell when I was having a one. They really weren't intense at all and I was surprised I was dialating so fast. I think I even knocked on the wood night stand as I expressed my awe at the situation. I was just praying that things would keep moving steadily along.

I talked (O.K., begged) the doctor into breaking my water at about 6:15. I was at a 5 then. An hour or so later, at a 6, he told me I could get into the warm tub whenever I liked. I wasn't sure I needed it yet.

I stood up and while walking to the bathroom, had a big contraction. It stopped me in my tracks. Travis held me up. I decided I was ready for that water....

Only Travis and I were in the birthing room with periodic visits from the doctor and his two doctor/assistants, Chrissy and Paula. I was in the water from about 7:45 until he checked me again at about 8:45 when I said I felt like I was ready to push and had sent Travis running down the hall to summon them. I was at a 9 1/2. Let me tell you that "1/2" is worth its weight in gold! Such a relief. I wanted to yell "Hallelujah!" Really? I couldn't believe I was that close and still felt so good. Dr. Ed knelt down next to the tub and said, "I couldn't ask for a better labor...at least for me!" I laughed and agreed that yes, it had definitely been ideal so far. I couldn't believe I was laughing while I was dilated to a 9. Amazing. This was by far less intense than when your brothers were born. Either that or I somehow had been blessed to be able to handle the pain more easily this time. I felt so blessed at that moment.

I pushed for 12 minutes and you were born in the warm water at exactly 8:57 p.m. Daddy was kneeling right behind me next to the tub looking over my right shoulder.

You had the cord around your neck. Doctor Ed easily removed it just after your head came out, but your face was still blue when he handed you to me. I talked to you and loved you until you finally took a breath and started to cry. Hard. It was music to my ears. I can't find the words to describe the rush of relief I felt when I knew you were o.k. It was incredible and still the thought brings tears to my eyes. We just love you so much!

It was then that I realized we hadn't taken any pictures yet. I asked Travis to go grab the camera. Then after he took some pictures of us in the tub, I handed you to him so you could get to know each other while the doctor got me all taken care of.

After I was tucked in the big bed with you cuddled to my chest, it was just the three of us again. I will always remember the total elation I felt knowing you were ours. Such a sweet moment of bliss. The doctor came in later to measure you. You weighed 9 pounds 4 ounces and were 21 3/4 inches long.

You were our cute purple princess that night!

Another baby was getting ready to be born that night, so we were moved to another room upstairs in the clinic for the night. Dr. Ed wanted to keep an eye on you through the night before we would be leaving to come home.

I could hardly sleep all night I was so happy. I just held you next to me and listened to you breathe as I gazed at you in the dark. I told Grandma Davis the next morning that you were like my own little squeaky toy. That is what you sounded like to me as you slept so soundly in my arms.

In the morning, the sun shone brightly through the windows and Daddy got up to go pick up your brothers. Grandma and Grandpa Davis flew in that Monday morning from Salt Lake City, Utah. Travis and the boys picked them up from the Portland airport on their way back to the clinic to meet you.

We could hear the boys' excited talking echo as they hurried up the stairs to our room. Tyler came over smiling and immediately sang to you his adorable version of your song, "Baby Face". Ty had been singing it to you daily for the past 5 months while you were still in my belly. It was so sweet to see the adoration in his eyes and voice as he already knew his baby sister. And you knew him, too. He had been waiting so long for you to arrive. Justin was so happy to see you he couldn't stop smiling. After a while, he said his cheeks hurt but he still couldn't stop grinning and giggling. I'll always remember the utter joy we all felt welcoming you into our family.

Grandma and Grandpa Davis gave you cuddles and kisses while we took lots of pictures.

Then Daddy tucked you in your car seat and we carried you outside for your next adventure...Coming home.

I love you, baby girl! XOXO, Mommy

p.s. I nearly typed this whole post left-handed while holding you. Most of it at 2:00 in the morning during your first month. That seems to be when you would be wide awake. I hardly ever put you down. I am just enjoying every second with you.

Brimming

Our backyard has been brimming over with life this week:

I love the hydrangeas!

Our 6 different varieties of tomatoes are going to town and I'm sure before we know it we'll have tomatoes coming out of our ears.

The boys run outside each day to check for new baby sweet tomatoes. It is our favorite treat this summer.

The boys were given a "Live Butterfly Garden" for Christmas from their cousins and I finally sent in the postcard for the 5 live caterpillars. Just 2 1/2 weeks later...4 beautiful painted lady butterflies hatched from their cocoons. Time to let them fly away to butterfly land...

We're still waiting for our new baby girl to "hatch"...39 weeks now...can't wait!

She's almost here!  We can't wait to hold her in our arms.

Happy Birthday Travis!

I'm pretty sure this isn't what Travis ordered for his birthday today...

We felt blessed to have noticed the lovely washing machine leak in the first place and that the damage wasn't as extensive as we had originally thought. Our good friend, Mark Stokes, worked his magic and repaired the damaged floorboards and wall for us. It looks as good as new and Travis ended up getting a new washing machine for his birthday.

After some birthday banana cream pie, he forgot all about his "I'm so old and my house is falling apart" woes long enough to try out his real birthday present...our new camera.

Tyler loves to give his baby sister hugs and sing "Baby Face" to her. She always kicks for him. I really should catch it on video one of these days...it is adorable! I'm 36 weeks along in this picture.

Basketball Camp and Swimming Lessons

The boys were busy last week with basketball camp and swimming lessons. A family from our church offers a fun basketball camp in their driveway each summer for the neighborhood kids. Their teenage boys put the money they earn by coaching towards their college/mission funds. Tyler was so happy to be old enough to participate this year . Here is Justin with Coach Josh and Coach David (middle) and the rest of their team: Tyler with Coach Josh (left) and Coach David (right): Tyler's team: I was such a good 35 week cheerleader from the sidelines:

The boys both made great strides in swimming this week. Justin can now swim the width of the pool and Tyler can bob with the best of them. Good job guys!

Troopers

We have been busy moving down our to-do-before-the-baby list. Yesterday was a big work in the yard day. Our big 24th of July celebration. I’m sure when the baby is born she will be so pleased to see the transplanted bushes, new plants and bark mulch. lol! At least Travis and I will be able to relax and stop thinking of everything we have been wanted to improve in the yard.

The boys were troopers all day and were good helpers for Dad. When it was time for a break, Justin had a fun time building a dam and stream with our cute neighbors. Hopefully their mom doesn't mind them coming home all muddy (but happy).

Tyler is our fearless boy...he loves to get dirty and doesn't care if bugs are crawling on him. I woke up from a nap and looked out my bedroom window to see him doing this:

We had a nice little picnic out front on the grass for dinner. Travis and the boys did a great job with the yard and I like to think I did a great job cheering them on. Ha ha! Everyone slept like rocks last night.

Bits and Pieces...June Bugs and July Sun

I think of this past June, I think I will always remember the dragonflies. I don't remember seeing any other years. Now, it seems like every day we seen 10 or more of different colors in our yard. The boys love it and have been trying to catch them with their nets.

Here are some pictures of the boys' entries in our ward's primary talent show held one Saturday in June:

My cute neighbor, Upi, planned a baby shower for me on June 19th at a little restaurant called The Stratford House. There are four other young moms on our street and we all went out to lunch to celebrate our baby on the way. It was so kind of them to think of our little family. It is such a blessing to live near such neat women. I have really enjoyed our friendships and all our our bus stop chats during the school year. It is a bonus that we all have kids close to the same ages and that my boys have such a fun time playing with all the neighbor kids. We have just enjoyed living here in this neighborhood these past 8 years.

Danielle (from Texas), Me at 30 weeks, Eden (from Africa), Korin (from New Jersey) and Upi (from Canada/England)

The 1st counselor and secretary of our RS presidency were released at the end of June and so we went out for milkshakes at Moonstruck Chocolates for our last big hurrah. I just love these ladies and am so happy we will always be good friends.

Shalyce, Carrie, Sherry, and Me (at 31 weeks)

I even snuck in a matinee movie outing with Sherry and Kelly one Friday afternoon to see Eclipse.

We are loving this WARM July...along with my little portable fan that follows me around the house some days. Travis laughs at me sleeping with no covers and the fan blowing right at me while he is freezing and covered in the blankets. In the backyard, our tomato and pea plants are blooming and we check every couple of days to see if something is ready to be picked. The boys are loving the slip n' slide, bubbles, sidewalk chalk and moving our slide into the little kiddie pool.

Justin LOVED Cub Scout day camp every day last week. Travis even joined the pack for one day as a parent leader. Justin's top five favorite activities during the week were tropical geysers (bottle rockets), obstacle course, nature trail, bb gold (target shooting)and clay sculpting. It was fun to listen to him sing the camp songs they learned and to watch him teach Tyler the silly skits that were performed.

I have more pictures to post from our adventures to the zoo, beach, etc. I am trying to catch up with my blog posts before the baby arrives. I'm trying to organize our family pictures and update the boys' pictures books. We have been saving up our Christmas, birthday, mother's day and father's day presents so we could buy a new digital SLR camera. We picked it up last week and are excited to learn how to use it and start taking lots of great pictures. One of these days, I want to take a photography class to really learn how to use the new camera.

Time is flying by so quickly. I'll be 35 weeks along in a couple of days. I am feeling great and we are just so excited for our baby girl to arrive. Right now we are trying out different baby names each day in the hopes of finding one that fits just right for our little girl. Tyler and Justin sing "Baby Face" to the baby every day and talk to her a lot. Tyler says he is going to be really busy taking care of the baby when she is born and that Justin will really have to help out around the house. I asked him what that means and he said, "You know...chores. Justin will have to do all the chores." I asked Tyler what he'll be doing to help the baby and he said he would "throw away every single diaper and I'll pick out the bows for her head." I wonder if he realizes that all those diapers won't smell like roses. But, I'll take his enthusiastic help while I can get it! Justin says he can take care of the baby "all day long...except for changing diapers." I love that! I hope our baby girl knows how much we love her already and how excited we are to have her in our family. We're counting down!

Happy Birthday Justin!

We celebrated Justin's birthday for three days this year. Starting with a happy birthday treat for his class at school during their lunch time.

Then he came home from school and we decorated his Yoshi cake for his Mario Birthday Party the next day.

Justin helped me plan his friend party for weeks before his birthday arrived. He loves our Super Mario Brothers Wii game and wanted a party centered on that theme. We planned 9 different stations/worlds the boys would move through at the party. Justin wrote out a Mario story connecting each world and explaining what activity the kids would need to master at each station. As the boys completed each game, they earned gold stars and coins to buy their party prizes at the end.

Here's a quick summary of the nine worlds:

World 1: Stick the egg on Yoshi

World 2:

World 3:

World 4:

World 5:

World 6: Yoshi egg on a spoon race

World 7:

Just a day at the beach...

On July 17th, we spent the afternoon on the Oregon Coast at our favorite spot...Cannon Beach.

Here I am at 34 weeks along:

And when it is cold on the beach...all this boy needs is a neat sheet:

I flew this big kite for at least an hour while sitting down the whole time. It was a perfect kite day at the beach. Effortless!

We finished our day at the beach with a new tradition...dinner at Camp 18. We finally tried it and LOVED it!
