Yikes

We were going upstairs to get ready for bed late last night when Allie woke up. We have the crib in our room and I'm dragging my feet about moving her to her own room. Well anyway, I picked her up and was walking over to change her diaper when the power went out. Total darkness. Our whole neighborhood was out of power so no street lights were on either. I just froze where I was and tried to focus on where things were in our room. I couldn't see a single thing. Not even Allie in my arms. It was a little bit scary.

Just then, Travis came up the stairs carrying his iPhone with the flashlight app on. That thing is just so cool. He grabbed our extra flashlights and we got ready for bed and I fed the baby.

As I rocked Allie, I couldn't stop thinking that I really, really need to update our 72 hour kits. I mean, if we suddenly had to leave our house, the kits we do have are so outdated it wouldn't even be worth taking them with us. How miserable would it be to be in the middle of an emergency and have absolutely nothing packed for the baby but plenty of toddler clothes for Justin and Tyler?

The power was back on within an hour of so, but it was a good wake-up call for this mommy. So there you have it...my new goal for this month. Pack a little bag for each of us.

And if I find some stylin' bags like the ones in this picture, I may just be hoping for an emergency so I can actually use them. Knock on wood.

So seriously, do you have any tips for me? Something that has worked for your family?

Hooray! Welcome back! She is delicious! I just updated ours last week because I realized the same thing. We have two buckets and two back packs with wheels. We figured we may need the bucket in the emergency and both of us can carry a pack. The wheels just in case... its an added bonus if we need to strap something else on. We dont keep actual food in ours, rather its next to our food storage and I figure it will be easier to keep food rotated and grab it when we grab the bags in the emergency. :) Good Luck!

Kari, that is a great idea to do a roller back pack so you have the option of carrying or pulling. Also, I think that is the most brilliant thing I have heard...to just keep the food parts in a separate container next to the food storage. That is the tricky part to rotate it before everything goes bad. I always thought the food had to be mixed up with the clothes...duh! Thanks!

I just packed a "car kit" (we have a compartment under our floor in our van). Each person has a ziplock of clothes then there's a lot of other stuff (snacks, medicine, coloring books, water, flashlights, first aid, etc). Instead of packing a double of all that we decided that it would be part of our 72 hour kit that we would grab and add to the containers in the house if needed. I love having all that stuff in the car for the lesser emergencies. And since the kids are old enough that I don't carry a diaper bag all the time, the clothes have definitely come in handy already!

Having said all that...I got the car kit done but haven't finished updating the rest of the 72 hour kit in the house...one thing at a time!

Hi JaNae! Thanks for the "car kit" idea using a zip-lock. Come to think of it, I probably still have pull-ups from Tyler out there. Yeah, that would be useful! :) It shouldn't take too long to put a few little bags together. This I can do. Great idea!
